I am going to start by saying that if I ever think that I don't have a reason to visit Terre Haute, I hope that someone reminds me of this restaurant!
Hands down a true diamond in the rough. This places delivers on everything that a good restaurant should deliver on. The hospitality, top notch. The food, unbeatable. The atmosphere, it has to be experienced to truly be able to understand it.
I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted and introduced to all of the bartenders. They have fairly extensive beer and wine list and a full bar. All of the bartenders seemed knowledgeable and friendly.
I asked for a recommendation, and was then told about the specials for the evening. I opted for the two cheese ravioli in a sage brown butter sauce with roasted pistachios, a meatball for an appetizer, and a beer.
Before the meatball arrived I was given some of their homemade bread, butter, and tomato jam. The meatball was easily the best meatball I have ever had. Moist, balanced, and flavorful. Each bite was filled with just the right amount of meat, cheese, and sauce. 100% would recommend.
The ravioli arrived soon after, and I had to take a minute to allow myself to appreciate the beauty of the dish before I started eating it. The sage brown butter sauce was nutty and light. The ravioli are made fresh daily in their "pasta lab". The filling was a smooth creamy mixture of ricotta and Parmesan. A wonderful, filling entree.
I was then treated to a little history of the restaurant. The building used to be home to a dive bar. It was purchased by the current owners and they embarked on renovating and restoring the building to its current state of beauty.
I opted to order the hummingbird cake and a shot of espresso to complete this incredible meal. The cake is a banana pineapple spice cake with cream cheese frosting. The cake was moist, and delicious. The icing was lighter than I'd anticipated and not overly sweet. A perfect dish to end the meal.
Take a walk around the restaurant. Beyond the pasta lab, is a room that is filled with 17th century artwork that has been brought over from an Italian villa. So cool. -

Bar Bosco is a unique facet to Terre Haute and I have put much thought into what I would write for it. I will keep going back because I believe it's going through a kind of growing pain.
I am impressed by the decor and authenticity of the food/drink. It is well above the standard food of the area, and is desperately needed in this town.
I have some concerns. The food we have eaten hasn't been amazing, it is usually heavily oily/garlic/buttery. I can make a dish with those items, throw in a few fancy meats and herbs and call it good. It seems like there's little balance between the pasta and the sauce usually. The sauce often overpowers everything in the dish when it should complement the dish.
A few of the servers are kind of creepy. While they are attentive, I found myself stared at by the severs. The servers we had were always interrupting when we didn't need them, and then weren't around when we needed them. Again, I'll keep going to see if the staff evolves, but it's an odd system they have currently.
Parking is difficult and I don't see how that will improve when the main dining area opens.
One of my biggest gripe is the music. The dance club music in the bar doesn't fit the atmosphere. The decor says traditional and high class, but the music makes you believe there's a dance floor nearby. It's not that I wouldn't mind dance music, it's mostly that the same set of 2-3 (maybe it's just one?) songs plays over and over.
I, personally, want this business to succeed. You can tell the owner is really trying. It's in a rough part of town with the rundown buildings of 7th and the crowd that brings nearby. It's out of its element in this town right now, it could make it as it seems the town is changing for the good. I just hope it becomes part of the change, and doesn't hold to its guns or the newness will wear off as the upper echelon or the town (friends of the owner) are the only people to make it into the bar. -

A great restaurant, very interesting interior, a darker interior as far as lighting is concerned. The Restaurant is well staffed and all staff is friendly and helpful. It fills up quickly at 6 pm on a Wednesday night, the front dining is already full. The menu is limited in choices, however the choices are delicious. The lasagne, sweet sausage, and spaghetti was tasty and portions filling.
The Hummingbird Cake had little to no pineapple or banana taste, but still very good. The Cannoli was decent however the cream lacked texture, however still very good. Tiramisu was hand crafted and was delicious.
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone look for good Italian food. -

Dinner here Friday was a good experience overall.
Loved: the salami appetizer. Just do it! We also enjoyed bread, our entrees, and loved the espresso martini after dinner.
I tried the ravioli special which was good. My boyfriend got lasagna and we both liked it.
The only real downside was the waitress hesitating and unable to answer basic questions about the cocktail menu and us having to flag her down to order more drinks and dessert.
We will likely be back but hope for better service. Would love to see them succeed in Terre haute. -

Bookmark this place and then make reservations. Even on a weeknight when they opened (4 pm), I was only able to be seated at the bar since all the tables were reserved. Okay, it wasn't filled with customers that early, but they were coming and customers on the phone were told the same thing or turned away when inquiring about the evening.
The bar is open now and offers the full menu that the soon to open (Summer 2019) restaurant will have. There are double doors that will open between the family friendly restaurant and the 21+ bar. So, I settled into the bar seating, noting that there was plenty of leg room beneath the counter. Most of the bar tables were small round ones that would seat 2, maybe three. There were a few larger tables at the back and near the front.
The staff, though busy, were very friendly and shared information about the place freely. I ordered one of their cocktails (Negroni) which was quite tasty and colorful.
Although the menus list the bread course at $5, I was informed that it was free for NO charge. So I ordered a small basket of the bread which comes with a ball of butter and a delicious tomato marmalata. Use both! The marmalata is so good that I wish I could buy it for home!
I also took my bartender's (Emily) advice and tried the Salame Bosco. This large plate is shareable, but I was also able to finish it off by myself. The dish has seven discs of salami topped with toasted walnuts, shaved pecorino, and drizzled with acacia honey. Although it could be eaten with a knife and fork, I thought the walnuts might break when speared, so I simply folded each piece of salami like a taco, and was able to eat the appetizer without getting honey on my hands. It had a really good flavor combination with the savory and peppery salami hitting my palate first, but then the deeper flavors from the cheese and nuts and the sweetness of the honey kicking in as I chewed. Nice layering!
I also went with the Alimenati Lasagna which I also enjoyed. Some of the noodles got a little crispy on the edges from the roasting, so it added a nice little crunch to the bites. Not too filling for me, but I could see someone placing part of this in a 'to go' box.
I was on a roll, and decided to try one of their desserts which are all made in house too. I went with a large scoop of Crema Gelato which was chocolate flavored and came with a large tuile. The gelato wasn't as sweet as some ice cream I've had and the tuile added a complementary crunch and a bit more sweetness.
The bar is rather dark inside, but not so much that I had any trouble reading the menu or taking photos with my camera. The restrooms are in the back and have a men's, women's, and unisex rooms that share a common double sink in that parlor area.
Look, this isn't a stuff your face for a cheap price location. It is an upscale business that offers high quality ingredients and tasty flavor combinations with friendly and efficient service. If you don't like the prices, then don't come in and complain about it. This is a place I would gladly bring my wife and friends to dine with me and explore more of the menu. I'll be sure to make reservations in advance though.
